When assessing a debate, teachers may wish to give feedback to students regarding their claims in a discussion. The Teacher Feedback feature allows participants with Admin rights or higher (see: Participant Rights and Roles) to give feedback directly on claims, as well as specify which participants are able to view the feedback given.
For advice on how to get the most out of the Teacher Feedback feature when grading a Kialo assignment, see Tips for Grading Kialo Assignments.

Enabling/Disabling the Teacher Feedback Feature
Teacher Feedback is disabled by default. To enable the Teacher Feedback feature:
- Open the Discussion Settings.
- Navigate to the ‘Feedback on Claims’ section.
- Check the ‘Enable Feedback on claims’ box.
To disable the Teacher Feedback feature, follow the same steps as above, this time unchecking the ‘Enable Feedback on claims’ box. It can be useful to disable this feature if you wish to view a discussion without seeing the feedback you or other Admins have already given.
Note that when the Teacher Feedback feature is disabled, feedback cannot be given or viewed (including feedback which has already been added). To hide Teacher Feedback from students, it is recommended to set Feedback Visibility (see following section) to ‘Admins Only’.
Disabling Teacher Feedback does not erase feedback given while it was enabled, and feedback given reappears when Teacher Feedback is re-enabled.
Adjusting Teacher Feedback Visibility
Admins in a discussion can specify which participants are able to see Teacher Feedback.
You can adjust Teacher Feedback to be visible to Admins only (default), Admins and claim authors, or all participants in a discussion. Regardless of which setting is selected, only participants with Admin rights or higher are able to give Feedback on claims.
To adjust Teacher Feedback visibility:
- Open the Discussion Settings.
- Navigate to the ‘Feedback on Claims’ section.
- In the ‘Feedback on individual claims is visible for’ menu, select the appropriate option.
Students can view Teacher Feedback on all of their claims by opening the My Claims list (located in the Discussion Menu), where any feedback for their claims appear underneath the claim. If students wish to respond to feedback, they can do so by commenting on the specific claim.
How to Give, Edit or Remove Teacher Feedback
Once Teacher Feedback has been enabled, you are able to open the Teacher Feedback window by clicking the teacher’s hat icon on a claim. Then, enter the feedback for that claim in the text box. To link to another claim in your feedback, simply drag it into the text box from the discussion or clipboard, or click the ‘+’ sign and select Paste. Once finished, click ‘Save’.
Teacher Feedback given on claims is location-specific, meaning that if a claim has been linked in multiple locations (see: Moving/Linking a Claim), you should give separate feedback for each claim location if appropriate.
To edit any Teacher Feedback given, reopen the feedback window by clicking the pencil icon on the feedback.
To remove Teacher Feedback, reopen the feedback window by clicking the pencil icon on the feedback and click on the 'Delete' button. A confirmation window appears to ensure you wish to delete the Feedback.
