Using Kialo with Google Classroom
There are three suggested methods to use Kialo with Google Classroom:
1. Use the Kialo Google Classroom App (Recommended)
Kialo has an installable app listed in the Google Workspace Marketplace. This is the most convenient way to use Kialo with Google Classroom; however, it must be installed for your workspace first. Using the Kialo Google Classroom app has the following benefits:
- You can add a Kialo discussion as an assignment directly in Google Classroom without needing to manage any permissions or invite students.
- Students will be automatically signed in to Kialo using their Google Classroom information (or have accounts created for them).
- Students will have the same name in Kialo as their Google Classroom account.
- Roles in the Kialo discussion will be automatically assigned for students (Writer) and teachers (Admin).
- Only members of your Google Classroom can access the Kialo discussion by default.
- Grades and feedback you assign students in Kialo can be synced back to your Google Classroom assignment.
2. Import Your Google Classroom to a Discussion
You can import your Google Classroom into your Kialo discussion, inviting all your students in a few clicks. Use this method if you can’t install the Kialo Google Classroom app.
3. Link to an Instant Access Kialo discussion
You can use this method to have quick, one-off discussions with your students during class.
1. Use the Kialo Google Classroom App (Recommended)
First, install the Kialo Google Classroom app for your workspace. Open the Kialo Discussion app listing and click Install. Any educator may be able to do this, or you may need to ask your workspace admin, depending on your workspace settings.
Once the Kialo app is installed, to add a Kialo discussion to your assignment:
- In your assignment, under the Add-ons section, select Kialo.
- Select a Kialo discussion or create a New one.
- Choose your Small Group Mode setting, then click Save.
a. If you want all of your students to work in the same discussion, select No Groups.
b. If you want your students to work in separate copies of the discussion, select the appropriate option. Automatically assign to groups (recommended) splits your students randomly into the number of groups entered. - Add and/or configure any further assignment settings as needed, then click Assign.
Syncing Kialo Grades with Google Classroom
The grades and feedback you provide students in Kialo can be synchronized to your Google Classroom. To do so:
- Ensure the Grading and Feedback feature is enabled in a Kialo discussion.
- Assign students their Overall Grade and any feedback for the discussion as appropriate.
- Once finished, in the Grading and Feedback panel, click the Sync button.
