{"id":518,"date":"2022-08-05T14:40:18","date_gmt":"2022-08-05T14:40:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/hc\/uncategorized\/about-anonymous-discussions\/"},"modified":"2024-10-20T09:48:38","modified_gmt":"2024-10-20T09:48:38","password":"","slug":"about-anonymous-discussions","status":"publish","type":"docs","link":"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/about-anonymous-discussions\/","title":{"rendered":"About Anonymous Discussions"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h_01G3QJP0ZEX2SGBBB6P6QK7GZT\">About Anonymous Participation<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discussions can be one of two participation types: <strong><em>Standard Participation<\/em><\/strong>, where participant usernames are visible as normal for all users; or <strong><em>Anonymous Participation<\/em><\/strong>, where participants&rsquo; username and avatar is replaced with a randomized color-animal combo such as &ldquo;Purple Penguin.&rdquo;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Anonymous Discussions, <em>Owners and Admins&rsquo; names are not anonymized<\/em><strong> <\/strong>and <em>they are able to view &ldquo;real&rdquo; usernames<\/em><strong> <\/strong>of all participants in the discussion if desired (see <a href=\"#viewing-real-identities-in-anonymous-discussions\">here<\/a>).<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participants in an Anonymous Discussion are informed of their newly assigned username upon entering the discussion for the first time.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once a discussion is set to Anonymous Participation, <em>it cannot be reverted back to the Standard Participation type<\/em>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discussions can be set to Anonymous Participation either when creating a new discussion or using a Topic Template (i.e., be anonymous from the start), or discussions can be converted to Anonymous Participation from Standard Participation at any point.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Users have different anonymous identities in separate discussions. For example, if a user is &ldquo;Purple Penguin&rdquo; in one Anonymous Discussion, they might be &ldquo;Orange Cat&rdquo; or &ldquo;Blue Octopus&rdquo; in a different Anonymous Discussion.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students can work out the identity of other participants if they reveal any personally identifiable information, such as in a <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/commenting-on-a-claim\/\" data-type=\"docs\" data-id=\"536\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">comment<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/discussion-chat\/\" data-type=\"docs\" data-id=\"522\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">discussion chat<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul><section class=\"kialo-callout class=\"callout-content\">\n        <em>Note:<\/em>\n\t\t<p>Only discussion <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/hc\/participant-roles-and-permissions\/\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">Owners and Admins<\/a> are able to view the real usernames of users in an Anonymous Discussion.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section><p>Owners and Admins in a discussion can toggle whether they view the anonymous or real display names for users. To do so, open <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" class=\"wp-image-3639\" style=\"width: 24px;\" src=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/08\/perspectives.png\" alt=\"\"> <strong>Visibility settings <\/strong>in the top left corner, then toggle <strong>Display anonymous usernames<\/strong> as appropriate.
