If your Canvas instance was configured to use Kialo via LTI before December 2024, your Admin should update your Canvas settings. See the <strong><a href=\"#admins-setting-up-kialo-on-canvas\">Setting up Kialo on Canvas<\/a><\/strong> section for details.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section><p>There are three recommended ways to use Kialo with Canvas:<\/p><p><\/p><p><br><\/p><p style=\"font-size:20px\"><strong><a href=\"#1-use-lti\">1. Use LTI<\/a><\/strong><br><\/p><p>LTI is the best way to integrate Kialo with Canvas, but a Canvas admin must set it up. Students will be automatically signed in and have the same name in Kialo as in Canvas. Grades you assign in Kialo will be synced back to Canvas, and students will automatically be assigned the Writer role in your Kialo discussions. This improves security as you don&rsquo;t need to use sharing links. Your Canvas groups can be synced and used on Kialo.<\/p><p><br><\/p><p><\/p><p style=\"font-size:20px\"><strong><a href=\"#2-link-to-an-instant-access-kialo-discussion\">2. Link to an Instant Access Kialo discussion<\/a><\/strong><\/p><p>This makes it very easy to have a quick discussion with your students.<\/p><p><br><\/p><p><\/p><p style=\"font-size:20px\"><strong><a href=\"#3-link-to-a-standard-kialo-discussion\">3. Link to a standard Kialo discussion<\/a><\/strong><\/p><p>This offers improved security over using an Instant Access discussion; however, you must enter students&rsquo; email addresses once, and they will have to log in or register themselves.<\/p><p><br><\/p><p><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Use LTI<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teachers: Using Kialo on Canvas<\/h3><p>Once Kialo has been added as an app to Canvas by an admin (<a href=\"#admins-setting-up-kialo-on-canvas\">see below<\/a>), add it to your course:<br><\/p><p><br><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In your course, open the <strong>Assignments<\/strong> section, then click <strong>+ Assignment<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter a name for the assignment and adjust the grading settings if applicable.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For <strong>Submission Type<\/strong>, select <strong>External Tool<\/strong>. Next, click the <strong>Find<\/strong> button and select <strong>Kialo Edu<\/strong>. <br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Select a Kialo discussion<\/strong> or create a <strong>New<\/strong> one.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose your <strong>Small Group Mode<\/strong> setting, then click <strong>Save<\/strong>.<br>a. To use your <a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/t5\/Canvas-Basics-Guide\/What-are-Groups\/ta-p\/16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canvas Groups<\/a>, select <strong>Use LMS Groups<\/strong> and pick the appropriate <a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/t5\/Instructor-Guide\/How-do-I-view-all-groups-in-a-course-as-an-instructor\/ta-p\/696\">Group Set<\/a>.<br>b. If you want <strong>all<\/strong> of your students to work in the <strong>same<\/strong> discussion, select <strong>No Groups<\/strong>. <br>c. If you otherwise want your students to work in <strong>separate copies<\/strong> of the discussion, select the appropriate option. It&rsquo;s quickest to select <strong>Automatically assign to groups<\/strong> and enter the number of groups they should be split into. <br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Select<\/strong>, then the appropriate <strong>Save<\/strong> button. <\/li>\n<\/ol><p>Done! When students click the link, they will automatically be granted the correct permissions to participate in the discussion and be assigned to their relevant group, if applicable.<\/p><section class=\"kialo-callout tip\">\n    <div class=\"callout-icon-wrapper\">\n        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/wp-content\/themes\/wp-helpcenter-theme\/assets\/icons\/star.svg\" alt=\"tip\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" class=\"callout-icon\">\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"callout-content\">\n        <em>Tips:<\/em>\n\t\t<p>Kialo also supports being added to Canvas courses as an External Tool rather than an Assignment, however the Grading feature will only function correctly if Kialo is added as an Assignment. <\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Admins: Setting up Kialo on Canvas<\/strong><\/h3><p>There are multiple methods outlined below for setting up Kialo on Canvas. Search for the <strong>Kialo<\/strong> and <strong>Kialo API<\/strong> keys and <strong>enable them<\/strong>. <br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Navigate to <strong>Admin<\/strong> &gt;<strong><em> {Name of your site<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>}<\/em> <\/strong>&gt; <strong>Settings<\/strong> &gt;<strong> Apps <\/strong>&gt; <strong>View App Configurations<\/strong> and click <strong>+ App<\/strong>.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For <strong>Configuration Type<\/strong>, select <strong>By Client ID<\/strong>, enter Kialo&rsquo;s ID: <strong>170000000001894<\/strong>, and then click <strong>Submit<\/strong>.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kialo-edu.com\/canvas\/setup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">https:\/\/www.kialo-edu.com\/canvas\/setup<\/a>:<br>a. Select <strong>Canvas Cloud<\/strong><br>b. Enter your Canvas instance URL (domain names only; must start with http:\/\/ or https:\/\/)<br>c. Click <strong>Connect<\/strong>, then <strong>Authorize<\/strong> in the new window<br><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Done! Kialo Edu should now appear in the <strong>External Apps<\/strong> list, and support for your Canvas Groups has been set up.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"\" data-pds-tabs--accordion-initially-open=\"false\">\n<section class=\"kialo-callout warning\">\n    <div class=\"callout-icon-wrapper\">\n        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/wp-content\/themes\/wp-helpcenter-theme\/assets\/icons\/alert.svg\" alt=\"warning\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" class=\"callout-icon\">\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"callout-content\">\n        <em>Warning:<\/em>\n\t\t<p>If you set up Kialo via LTI before December 2024, as Canvas does not allow editing existing keys, to use Canvas Groups on Kialo you must add a new key using the instructions below. Only modules created using the new key (i.e. created after this has been done) will be able to use Canvas Groups on Kialo. As existing modules using your current key will break if the key is removed, you should keep your old key active as long as existing modules should be supported (but renamed to &ldquo;<i>Outdated Kialo App<\/i>&rdquo; or similar so educators are aware they should use the updated version).<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LTI Setup<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Navigate to <strong>Admin<\/strong> &gt;<strong><em> {Name of your site}<\/em> <\/strong>&gt;<strong> Developer Keys<\/strong>. Click <strong>+ Developer Key<\/strong> and select <strong>+ LTI Registration<\/strong>.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the <strong>Register App<\/strong> window, enter: https:\/\/www.kialo-edu.com\/lti\/dynreg<br>Then click <strong>Continue<\/strong>. <br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For <strong>Kialo Discussion Settings<\/strong>: <br><br>In <strong>Permissions<\/strong>, <strong>check<\/strong> &lsquo;Can create and update submission results for assignments associated with the tool&lsquo;<br>For <strong>User data shared with this tool<\/strong>, select <strong>All user data<\/strong>.<br>For <strong>Placements<\/strong>, enable <strong>Link selection<\/strong> and <strong>Assignment selection<\/strong>.<br><br>In <strong>Link Selection<\/strong>, for <strong>Selection Height<\/strong>, enter: <strong>600<\/strong><br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Save <\/strong>the key. It should now be listed under <strong>Developer Keys<\/strong>. Toggle the <strong>State<\/strong> of the Kialo key to <strong>On<\/strong>.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copy the Kialo key <strong>ID<\/strong> listed under Details (e.g., &ldquo;10000000000001&rdquo;). You will need this Client ID shortly.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Navigate to <strong>Admin<\/strong> &gt; <strong><em>{Name of your site}<\/em><\/strong> &gt; <strong>Settings <\/strong>&gt; <strong>Apps<\/strong> and click <strong>+ App<\/strong>.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For <strong>Configuration Type<\/strong>, select <strong>By Client ID<\/strong> and enter the <strong>Client ID<\/strong> copied in step 5. Finally, click <strong>Submit<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Kialo Edu should now appear in the <strong>External Apps<\/strong> list. Next, set up the Canvas REST API:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">API Setup<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Navigate to <strong>Admin<\/strong> &gt;<strong><em> {Name of your site}<\/em> <\/strong>&gt;<strong> Developer Keys<\/strong>. Click <strong>+ Developer Key<\/strong> and select <strong>+ API Key<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter the following:<br><br>Key Name: Kialo API<br>Redirect URIs: https:\/\/www.kialo-edu.com\/session\/callback\/canvas<br>Toggle Enforce Scopes to <strong>ON<\/strong><br><br><strong>Enable<\/strong> the following scopes: <br>url:GET|\/api\/v1\/courses\/:course_id\/group_categories<br>url:GET|\/api\/v1\/group_categories\/:group_category_id\/groups<br>url:GET|\/api\/v1\/groups\/:group_id\/memberships<br>url:GET|\/api\/v1\/courses\/:course_id\/sections<br>GET \/api\/v1\/courses\/:course_id\/groups<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Save <\/strong>the key. <br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under <strong>Details<\/strong>, <strong>note<\/strong> the<strong> Client ID<\/strong> of the Kialo API key listed<strong> <\/strong>(e.g., &ldquo;10000000000001&rdquo;) <strong>and<\/strong> the <strong>Client Secret<\/strong> (the value hidden by the &ldquo;Show key&rdquo; button). <br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kialo-edu.com\/canvas\/setup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">https:\/\/www.kialo-edu.com\/canvas\/setup<\/a>:<br>a. Select <strong>Self-hosted<\/strong><br>b. Enter your <strong>Canvas instance URL<\/strong> (domain names only), then your <strong>Canvas Client ID<\/strong> and <strong>Secret<\/strong> from the previous step<br>c. Click <strong>Connect<\/strong>, then <strong>Authorize<\/strong> in the new window<br><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Done! It should now be listed under <strong>Developer Keys<\/strong>. Toggle the <strong>State<\/strong> of the Kialo key to <strong>On<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copy the Kialo Edu key <strong>ID<\/strong> listed under Details (e.g., &ldquo;10000000000001&rdquo;). This is the Client ID you will need shortly.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Navigate to <strong>Admin<\/strong> &gt; <strong><em>{Name of your site}<\/em><\/strong> &gt; <strong>Settings <\/strong>&gt; <strong>Apps<\/strong> and click <strong>+ App<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For <strong>Configuration Type<\/strong>, select <strong>By Client ID<\/strong> and enter the <strong>Client ID<\/strong> copied during step 4. Finally, click <strong>Submit<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Kialo Edu should now appear in the <strong>External Apps<\/strong> list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to allow Canvas Groups to be used on Kialo, you also need to set up the Canvas REST API:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">API Setup<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Navigate to <strong>Admin<\/strong> &gt;<strong><em> {Name of your site}<\/em> <\/strong>&gt;<strong> Developer Keys<\/strong>. Link to an Instant Access Kialo discussion<\/h2><p>Use this if you do not want your students to create Kialo accounts.&nbsp;<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In Kialo, enter your discussion and click the<strong> Share<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Enable Instant Access (don&rsquo;t require Kialo accounts)<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Copy the link<\/strong> and use it in your course.<br><br><\/li>\n<\/ol><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Link to a standard Kialo discussion<\/h2><p>Use this if you can&rsquo;t use LTI but want to ensure students can&rsquo;t share the discussion outside of the classroom.<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In Kialo, enter your discussion, click the<strong> Share<\/strong> button, then click <strong>Invite Users<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter or select the email addresses of the students you want in the discussion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Next<\/strong>, then <strong>Invite<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Copy the link<\/strong> to the discussion and use it in your course. Students who do not have an account with the email address you used will have to log in or register for Kialo.<\/li>\n<\/ol><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Regarding Student View<\/h2><p>Kialo does not support Canvas&rsquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/t5\/Instructor-Guide\/How-do-I-view-a-course-as-a-test-student-using-Student-View\/ta-p\/1122\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Student View<\/a> feature.<\/p><p>The easiest way to experience what students can do in a discussion is to view our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kialo-edu.com\/demo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">demo discussion<\/a>, where you have the same rights as a student.<\/p><p>You can also enable <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/about-instant-access-discussions\/\" data-type=\"docs\" data-id=\"2740\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">Instant Access<\/a> to your discussion and open the discussion URL in an incognito tab, where you are not logged into Kialo. Students from your LMS will not get the &ldquo;<em>Enter your name<\/em>&rdquo; pop-up, as their accounts are automatically created.<\/p><p>All students accessing Kialo via an LMS integration have the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/participant-roles-and-permissions\/\" data-type=\"docs\" data-id=\"508\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">Writer role<\/a> in discussions by default. (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/participant-roles-and-permissions\/\" data-type=\"docs\" data-id=\"508\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\"><strong>Learn more<\/strong><\/a> about roles.)<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Regarding Grading on Canvas with Kialo<\/h2><p>If you assign a grade to a Kialo-related assignment in Canvas using a method other than Kialo&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/grading-and-feedback\/\" data-type=\"docs\" data-id=\"535\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">Grading<\/a> feature (such as through SpeedGrader), this will overwrite any grades given using Kialo&rsquo;s Grading feature, and grade syncing with Kialo will be disabled.
