Each template includes a customizable prompt for students and starter claims to begin the discussion. You can search for templates based on subject and suggested age group. <\/p><p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#e9f1fb\"><strong>New to Kialo Edu? <\/strong>You may find it useful to first review <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/getting-started-with-kialo-for-educators\/\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">Getting Started with Kialo for Educators<\/a> to familiarize yourself with common concepts used on Kialo.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Discussion Templates<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discussion templates are <strong>pre-made discussions <\/strong>which include a <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/writing-an-effective-thesis-for-student-discussions\/\" data-type=\"docs\" data-id=\"589\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">thesis<\/a>, starter <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/creating-a-claim\/\" data-type=\"docs\" data-id=\"544\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">claims<\/a>, student prompt in the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/adding-background-info\/\" data-type=\"docs\" data-id=\"500\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">background info<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/adding-tags-and-images\/\" data-type=\"docs\" data-id=\"503\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">cover image<\/a>, and discussion <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/changing-the-discussion-title\/\" data-type=\"docs\" data-id=\"499\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">name<\/a>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All aspects of the template, such as starter claims or background info for students, <strong>can be customized <\/strong>if desired during the creation process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Templates are <strong>organized by age group and category<\/strong>, and can be filtered to find those most appropriate for your class and subject. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once a template is selected, the prompts will guide you through configuring your discussion settings (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/discussion-tasks\/\" data-type=\"docs\" data-id=\"520\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">Tasks<\/a>). If you&rsquo;re not familiar with the different options, see <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/important-tools-and-features-for-educators\/\" data-type=\"docs\" data-id=\"583\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">Important Tools and Features for Educators<\/a> for an overview.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Consider setting up Kialo <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/about-teams\/\" data-type=\"docs\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">teams<\/a> <\/strong>for your students if you plan on using templates (or Kialo Edu in general) frequently, as this will greatly reduce setup time inviting students.<\/li>\n<\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using Discussion Templates<\/h2><section class=\"kialo-callout reminder\">\n    <div class=\"callout-icon-wrapper\">\n        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/wp-content\/themes\/wp-helpcenter-theme\/assets\/icons\/clip.svg\" alt=\"reminder\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" class=\"callout-icon\">\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"callout-content\">\n        <em>Reminder:<\/em>\n\t\t<p>You can edit any part of a template during setup or afterwards.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section><p>To use a template:<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kialo-edu.com\/templates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">Topics<\/a> <\/strong>in the navigation bar in <strong>My Kialo<\/strong> to open the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kialo-edu.com\/templates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\"><strong>Kialo Templates page<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Find a template to use<\/strong>. You can use the search and filtering options to:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>search via keyword;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>filter via subject\/category; and\/or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>filter via age ranges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Click a template<\/strong> <strong>you like the look of <\/strong>to bring up a preview. You can review the student prompt located in the Background Info section and hover over the pro and con claims to read the starter claims.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are happy with the template, <strong>click <\/strong>the <strong>Use Template <\/strong>button in the top-left of the window. Select either:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Include Starter Claims<\/strong> if you are happy with the claims in the template. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exclude Starter Claims<\/strong> if you want to provide your own starter claims or if students should create their own. The template thesis will remain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Follow the steps to configure your discussion<\/strong>. Click the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" class=\"wp-image-3617\" style=\"width: 24px;\" src=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/08\/help.png\" alt=\"\"> <strong>help icon<\/strong> next to any settings if you&rsquo;re unsure about them. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once finished, click <strong>Create <\/strong>to create your discussion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(<em>Optional<\/em>) <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/creating-a-claim\/\" data-type=\"docs\" data-id=\"544\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">Add<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/editing-a-claim\/\" data-type=\"docs\" data-id=\"551\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">adjust<\/a> any claims in the discussion if desired.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Invite your students!<\/strong> You can either enable a <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/about-link-sharing\/\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">sharing link<\/a> to easily share with students (be aware students may share this link outside the classroom) or <a href=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/en\/hc\/inviting-participants-to-a-discussion\/\" data-type=\"docs\" data-id=\"504\" referrerpolicy=\"unsafe-url\">invite students directly with their username or email address<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol><p>If you want to adjust any settings in your discussion after it&rsquo;s been created, you can do so by clicking the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" class=\"wp-image-4482\" style=\"width: 24px;\" src=\"https:\/\/support.kialo-edu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/08\/Settings.png\" alt=\"\"> <strong>Settings icon<\/strong> in the top-right of the discussion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kialo Edu offers a collection of discussion templates for you to use in the classroom.
